Online Learning (English 1)

Greetings English 1 Students & Families,

I would like to take this opportunity to explain our new policies and practices while we are operating online.

Google Classroom

  1. Fortunately, all students are already enrolled in Google Classroom, Membean, and No Red Ink and are ready to receive assignments digitally.
  2. I will be posting assignments at 8:00 on the first day of each week (Monday). The assignments can be found on the “classwork” tab of our google classroom. All assignments for the week will be due on Friday by 8:00 pm.
  3. The assignments will contain the following:
    1. chapters of reading for To Kill a Mockingbird. Students have their own copy checked out to them, however, if a book was left at school I will also be posting a pdf version on Google Classroom.
    2. A variety of reading comprehension activities
    3. Vocabulary Activities (Membean)
    4. Grammar Activities (No Red Ink)
    5. Friday’s work will include reading quizzes and a vocabulary test.
    6. There will be an optional digital journal where students can record their daily observations and reflections.
  4. Organization in Google Classroom- In order to assist with locating the daily assignments, I will be organizing all work in headers labeled by week. For example, “Week 11: March 16th- 20th”.  I will be posting assignments for each week under these headings.
  5. Students will complete the assignments digitally and then will submit them in Google Classroom.
  6. All work should be typed in Times New Roman, 12 font, and be double spaced unless indicated on the individual assignments.
  7. Work will be graded and added to the Aeries gradebook on Friday.
  8. Civil Rights Presentations- Students will record themselves giving their Civil Rights Research Presentation on Flipgrid. The assignment will be posted on Google Classroom on Monday, March 16th and will be due by Friday, March 20th at 8:00 pm. Students may record themselves in a seated position on a computer or smartphone. Students should still practice professional dress and presentation skills (make eye contact with the camera, keep a steady rate of speech, avoid filler words). While I will not see your slides, I can view them while watching your video on Google Classroom. Please continue practicing your speech until you are confident and remember to make sure you meet the 2-minute requirement. GOOD LUCK!!!

Digital Office Hours

  1. I will be available via email from 8:00AM to 5:00 PM daily.
  2. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns

For my wonderful students- While I may not be sitting just a few feet away, I am still here should you need anything. Remember- No questions are ever bad questions! If you need help with any of your assignments for any of your classes I will do my best to support you.  If you just need to talk- write it in your digital journal and I will get back to you. Instagram, Til Tok and SnapChat will go away, but your journals will forever contain your memories of this unique time.

“On the other side of a storm is the strength that comes from having navigated through it. Raise your sail and begin” - Gregory S. Williams. The online format is certainly a new adventure, but it is one we can navigate together.  I will miss all of the entertainment and joy you bring into my classroom over the next three weeks but remember I am just an email away.

Best Regards,

Ms. Jillian Montoya
