Victor Cantarella

Hi, I have been a French teacher here at California High for 17 years and an educator for over 23 years. My first two years of teaching took place In Paris, France. There, I taught English at Nanterre University. It was here that the teaching bug caught me. After returning to California, I became a substitute teacher until I received my Teaching Credential in 1997. I have been at Cal ever since. California High is a great place to be and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to serve the students here.

Hello!

Latin I, II, III & AP Latin
David Maust

Salve! That is "hello" in Latin. I am David Maust and I have taught Latin at California High School since 2004. We offer four years of Latin study at Cal-High with an option to take AP Latin in the 4th year.

I graduated from Biola University with a history degree and completed my Latin teaching credential through California State Long Beach. I enjoy teaching Latin because knowing Latin connects us more closely with both the ancient world and our own cultural heritage too. Latin is all around us, in our language, customs, history and institutions. I also see language as a highly interpersonal activity and that learning how to better communicate with one another will better our relationships and ability to meaningfully connect with others.

I also advise our Latin club, "The Dead Language Club," known as DLC. We do activities both on and off-campus to celebrate Roman culture and meet and compete with other Latin students in Southern California.

When I'm not teaching Latin I like to spend time with my family, garden, read and play folk music.
